Careers Education - Staff
It’s not only the members of our Careers team who strive to provide students with resources and guidance to make informed decisions on their futures, but also our teachers and other support staff. The opportunities that we offer our students are included in the Gatsby benchmark links and on our internal staff resources.
We make the links between what we learn in school and future careers opportunities visible to students wherever possible and keep a record of our careers involvement via our Curriculum Lead.
Please contact Helen Richards if you would welcome any additional support in helping our students in their careers journey!

After three challenging days and countless miles covered, our Silver DofE teams successfully completed their practice expedition! It took every ounce of grit and determination to push through long uphill trails. With tired legs, and heavy packs, our students made it through with smiles. We were lucky to have fine weather across all days, which lifted spirits and gave some unforgettable views. Thanks to accurate navigation skills, everyone stayed on course and supported each other every step of the way. Well done everyone!

On Wednesday 30th April, our Reading Ambassadors attended The Kernow Youth Book Awards (KYBA) in ‘The Fibre Hub’ at Pool. As part of our school’s commitment to being sustainable, we walked down to the train station (in glorious sunshine) and caught the train to the event!
There were some amazing and very different authors to entertain and inspire the students with talks and workshops. These included Robin Fulvey, Bex Hogan and Matt Oldfield. Robin talked about his book Fulmar, based on a boy whose life was saved by surfing, Bex discussed the darker side of fairytales and her book Nettle, whilst Matt spoke about the very popular series of football books that he’s written with his brother Tom.
At the end, a free book and certificate was given to each student, courtesy of The National Literacy Trust. It was an inspiring day and our students shone at being engaged, imaginative and articulate!

Our Kit Car Club is revving up for another exciting season!
They kicked things off by stripping down last year's cars - an important first step that gave a real insight into previous designs. This hands-on teardown sparked tons of discussion around improvements and fresh design ideas.
While debates over design flew across the workshop, the team decided to start where it counts: the electrics. Leading the way were students Kenza, Kit and Sam whose impressive skills and expertise offered plenty of learning opportunities that got the whole team moving forward with confidence. Kenza is very experienced in wiring cars so was truly in her element, whilst Kit and Sam worked with the cars last year so enjoyed taking the reins in a more senior role.
Throughout the process, the team have shown outstanding teamwork, problem solving skills and innovation, working together to navigate challenges and push their ideas forward. The club continues to be a brilliant example of STEM learning in action and we can't wait to see how the build takes shape! Good work everyone!

Our penultimate day on the slopes and what a day it’s been!
All skiers and boarders made it to the top of the mountain, soaking up the beautiful sunshine and breathtaking views. The energy is high, the snow is still fantastic, and the memories just keep coming. One more day to go—let’s make it count!

Yesterday, cold, crisp and glistening slopes greeted our skiers. By mid-morning the sun had made its way over the mountain and the snow conditions were perfect. It was great to see everyone progressing and having so much fun! Yesterday evening, the fun continued off slope with everyone enjoying an exhilarating luge run, followed by board games before bed.
Today, we've seen everyone progress further. Well done everyone…a fantastic day, and we’re looking forward to the quiz tonight!

Day one on the slopes of Les Orres, as anticipated, has been packed full of action!
Waking up to a beautiful bluebird morning, the conditions were perfect for our skiers and snowboarders. By lunchtime, the beginners had truly found their feet...the intermediates were becoming more adventurous...and the more experienced students were flying!
After their evening meal, everyone still had the energy for some spectacular sledging.
Amazing to see their determination and resilience.
Well done everyone!

Our HDS 2025 ski trip is now well underway! Whilst it was a long journey, the coach and ferry travel went smoothly, and our students have been fantastic HDS ambassadors!
Docking at Calais yesterday, the journey continued overnight, and today they enjoyed lunch by the side of a spectacular river en route. Arriving safely in Les Orres, they’ve had a jam packed afternoon! Quickly settling into their rooms, they received an orientation tour of the resort followed by boot/equipment fitting and, having just finished a fantastic meal, they are now snowballing in the evening sun!
Everyone is looking forward to a good nights sleep before hitting the slopes in the morning. Check back tomorrow to see all the action from their first day! #HDSSki2025

‘Beyond The Labels’ is a lunchtime group that has been run by local organisation RJ Working, at Humphry Davy School, since October 2024. The project introduces young people to Restorative Practice as a set of skills and a way of working together which supports leadership and teamwork.
Youth Workers from the RJ Working team have supported students in Years 9, 10 and 11 to build a safe and supported space to make connections, and explore issues related to identity. The group celebrates the ways in which we are different, and also the ways in which we are same, by finding the threads that connect us. These sessions have included games and creative activities; looking at issues that are important to them and how to challenge stereotypes and overcome prejudice.
The ‘Beyond The Labels’ group decided that they wanted to do something to share the values of their group with the wider community. The result is a beautiful mural that they designed and painted on our school grounds. The artwork is a stunning display of colour and natural shapes. Filled with words that are of great importance to us as a school, as well as a special someone who we hold very dear to our hearts. Our very own resident cat, Minstrel (who is still happily enjoying his retirement), has earned his place on the beautiful wall for all to see. It has been so lovely hearing all the comments of admiration and support as other students and staff move about the school throughout the day. The weather has certainly been on our side, with beautiful sunshine beaming down on our team as they transformed this blank canvas into their vision.
Thank you RJ Working for helping their idea come to life and a big ‘well done’ to our students for creating such a stunning mural for our school community to enjoy for years to come.

On Monday, we hosted our first ever trampoline event for local secondary schools. The amazing trampolines are a new addition to the PE department and have been a hugely popular afterschool club since we introduced them after Christmas.
The competitors created their own 10-bounce routine and performed it in front of a panel of judges and fellow participants. The fantastic support and encouragement from everyone involved helped the performers showcase their routines with confidence and pride.
The event was an outstanding success for all those who took part, there was a real sense of achievement and enjoyment. Due to its success, we are excited to announce that this will now be an annual event!

On Friday, HDS travelled to Truro Methodist Church for the annual Music for Youth Event. This year HDS took two new ensembles for their debut performances.
The first was the new Penwith Jazz Orchestra project led by Mr Bosworth. HDS facilitated students from four other schools to come together and play some quality jazz music. The jazz band played a great set, with Miles Davis's, 'Milestones', being a real highlight. Also worth a mention were the fantastic solos from Tom, Jemima and George. The other new ensemble performing were, 'All the Young Dudes', - a brand new choir focusing on highlighting lower voices. ATYD made a real impression on the judges who spoke of the importance of giving these students a voice and outlet. Lastly, a music trip is not complete without a trademark performance from our Impact choir led by Miss Kleiman. Once again, the judges commented on the detail and vocal quality in the performance.
Well done to all of our music students and the music team!

On Thursday a small group of enthusiastic Year 7 students took part in a live online comic masterclass with Hugh Raine of The Beano!
Hugh discussed the secrets of comic book creation, including Beano's iconic Betty & the Yeti. He then talked the students through a Yeti ‘drawalong’ and how to create their own comic strip. Betty & Yeti involves humorous stories about rampaging yetis and frolicking flamingos! Hugh’s latest book has just been realised and our students are looking forward to borrowing it from the library soon.
All students created fantastic yetis & comic strips and have been inspired to continue with their comic book creations. Well done everyone!
