The HDS Applied Arts faculty hosted a wonderful exhibition over the weekend at Richmond Chapel, Penzance. The exhibition celebrated the fantastic achievements of our 2024/25 GCSE cohort across their Fine Art, Textiles, Photography and 3D Design studies. It was a great opportunity for our alumni to showcase their hard work in a beautiful space within the creative community of Penzance.
The artworks on display were a mixture of both portfolio and exam pieces, exploring a selection of themes, and really showing off our students unique styles and dedication to their practice. Also on display were a selection of sketchbooks; giving a fascinating insight into students' individual journeys and their creative process.
We loved the exhibition and were so grateful to have the opportunity to show our local community the works of our amazing budding artists. A big thank you to Richmond Chapel for offering us this beautiful space.

We offer a wide range of clubs and activities here at HDS, and it is great to see everyone getting truly stuck in. We popped along to Netball and Rugby practice and were so impressed by how many students were in attendance. Keep getting involved everyone - as Mr. Marshall likes to say, the more you put into school, the more you get out!

On Friday 26th September, a group of Year 8 students attended The North Cornwall Book Festival, at St. Endellion near Port Isaac.
Three fantastic authors/poets entertained and inspired students with talks and workshops. These included Liz Hyder, Jo Cotterill and the Matt Windle who, as well as being a poet, is also a boxer!
The workshops were varied; from students imagining they had to leave their home for reasons such as war, to joint creative story writing and embracing rhyming words. Students also received a voucher that they exchanged for a free book in the book shop.
It was an inspiring day and several of our students were brave enough to share their stories and read them aloud to the group. Well done for being so confident, imaginative, engaged and articulate!
Students had this to say about the day.
"I loved the book festival and getting to know the authors and how they got to where they are today."
"I really liked the author Jo Cotterill, because her activity was very fun and she was nice. The activity was writing a short story but it had to start with the phase 'We're Leaving'."

Year 10 GCSE Drama students welcomed two practitioners from The Minack Theatre Education Team this week.
Our students worked with Millie and Becca, who are practicing theatre directors both in Cornwall and Nationwide, for a 2 hour Brechtian Theatre Workshop.
This was an excellent experience, full of fun filled games and activities, as well as students devising and creating theatre work, finishing with some amazing mini Brecht Pieces at the end of the session!
We can't wait to work with The Minack again in the future, and have been left truly inspired to carry on this work in lessons!

As part of their physical Geography fieldwork KS4 students have spent time out of school to investigate whether ‘the benefits of Penzance’s coastal defences outweigh the costs?’. Students completed wave counts, environmental quality surveys and field sketches; collecting evidence on whether the sea defences are needed. They also used anemometers to measure wind speed and staff demonstrated how to measure longshore drift to see if sediment was moving down the coastline. All of the data collected will be analysed and presented in class where students will then conclude whether the sea defences were worth the hefty price tag.

This week, ten students were given the opportunity to visit Castilly Henge to watch an excavation taking place. Students were taught about the significance of the site and how archaeologists believed that Castilly Henge may have been used to store weapons during the English Civil War. Students were able to see and hold artefacts from the site including hammers and arrow heads and were even able to take part in the sifting process. The students were a credit to our school and had a lovely day.

Fourteen of our creative film and performing arts students attended the Blue Juice Festival Sessions held at the Ritz, Penzance, on Saturday morning, 27th September.
They were invited by Carl Prechezer, director of the cult Brit surf film Blue Juice, as part of the film’s 30th anniversary celebrations in Penzance. Many industry professionals, cast members, and crew attended, several of whom hail from Cornwall.
The sessions included inspirational presentations and discussions introduced and led by Carl, alongside film and creative industry experts: Gideon Bright (Founder of Dryrobe), Carn Burton (Location Manager), Tori Peri (Head of Film Production, Film4), Emma Turner (Head of Film, Animation and Future Skills, ScreenSkills), Ed Rutherford (Director of Photography), and Dom Weeks (Film Office Manager, Screen Cornwall) — who also happens to be a Humphry Davy alumnus!
Our students were delighted to meet the speakers in person, ask questions about working in the creative industries, and share and discuss their own projects and ideas.
Blue Juice also raised funds for Plastic Free Penzance, the RNLI, and Surfers Against Sewage. This community event was made possible by Sustainable PZ, Film4, Screen Cornwall, and Skills UK.
We are looking forward to working again with Carl Prechezer, Dom Weeks, and Rachel Yates (Sustainable Penzance) in school, in the near future!

Twenty five of our best singers visited Truro to take part in an incredible day of workshops from members of The Sixteen Choir. They explored a range of repertoire, from a beautiful medieval piece by Hildegard of Binge to some modern folk, learning five songs in total! We ended the day by joining The Sixteen at Truro Cathedral to not only sing through some of the songs we had learned but also to have them perform to us! It was an incredible experience to sing in a Cathedral and, for some students, it was their first time being in the Cathedral itself. When asked what piece of advice they would give to the young singers, they replied, “be open to new experiences, listen to lots of styles of music and most importantly, keep singing!".

SUP club had an amazing session down in Penzance harbour after school this week. With the stunning September sun shining down on them, they couldn’t wait to get on (or in!) the water. What a fantastic way to round off a Wednesday.
