2nd place goes to Katelyn from Medra House! This cosy window scene is full of festive charm! We’re imagining that mug filled with hot chocolate (or a warming cup of tea!) as the subject gazes out onto a crisp winter night.
The little proposal happening in one of the boats? Absolutely magical — who doesn’t love a Christmas proposal! Well done!

The HDS Christmas Concert did not disappoint on Monday! After weeks of rehearsals, our talented students lit up the stage with stunning choir performances, brilliant solos, and plenty of Christmas cheer. From start to finish, the evening was filled with confidence, talent, and festive spirit, ending perfectly with a full stage performance of ‘Merry Christmas Everyone’.
Well done to all our amazing students - thank you for a wonderful evening!

Happy Birthday, Sir Humphry Davy!
We had a wonderful time celebrating with the Penzance community at the annual lantern parade on Friday. It was a chilly but dry evening - ideal conditions for our Science Ambassadors to proudly showcase their handmade lanterns. Joining them this year were our music students, who performed a magical selection of Christmas tunes at the Humphry Davy statue for all to enjoy.
After a short address, we loved hearing everyone come together to sing “Happy Birthday.” Thank you Penzance Council for another lovely community event.

Sir Humphry Davy’s statue stands proudly over a bustling, Christmassy Penzance in this delightful artwork by Year 8 student Adrina. Your use of colour is so vibrant and joyful - it really brings the whole scene to life! Another win for Longya - 4th place!

Another house competition this festive season came in the form of Christmas tree decoration, with each house decorating its own tree in its traditional colours. Using an array of decorations — including some wonderful handcrafted items made by students — each tree was designed with pride to represent its house.
Our Senior Leadership Team had the delightful - if difficult - task of judging the entries, and the competition was incredibly close. The creativity, teamwork, and festive cheer on display made this a brilliant celebration of house spirit.
Well done to all students involved, and congratulations to the winning house, Tevi, for their fabulously orange tree! Kemeneth claimed second place with their beautiful purple creation, with Medra taking third place.

It’s the final week of our Christmas countdown! The beautiful, iconic Mousehole lights are making an appearance today — taking 5th place in our countdown! Congratulations to Ella from Longya House. We were especially enchanted by the sparkly gem embellishments… they brought the whole scene to life with an extra touch of Christmas magic!

This wonderful coloured pencil drawing of Penzance Harbour was created by Harry from Medra House. Complete with the Scillonian ferry and a view of St Michael’s Mount, there’s no mistaking this scene! Santa being led by a ‘Red Nose’ pasty is absolutely brilliant! Congratulations on 6th place.

This gorgeous watercolour painting by Eleanor from Longya House takes 7th place! A snowy winter’s night, beautifully captured. We especially loved the colours on the harbour wall and the icicles hanging from the ladder — it has certainly made us want to wrap up warm! Congratulations.

It’s Friday, and today we’re announcing 9th and 8th place in our countdown!
9th place goes to Moreblessing from Kemeneth House for her wonderful coloured pencil drawing. Her cheerful snowman — complete with an adorable carrot nose — brought a big smile to our faces. Fantastic work!
Coming in at 8th place is Ethan from Aweni House! Ethan’s piece is bursting with character and full of intricate details — from the Christmas elf fishing to the seal popping its head up to say hi. It really is a fantastic festive scene. Well done, Ethan!

We were proud to host our first ever boxing event last week, organised by Active Cornwall and delivered by England Boxing. The programme provided students with a unique opportunity to experience high-quality boxing training — something many had never experienced before.
The sessions were fun, engaging, and competitive, giving students the chance to develop new skills while building confidence and teamwork. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with all students thoroughly enjoying the experience.
A huge thank you to Active Cornwall — we look forward to working together again and hope to host more events like this soon!

Last week, students spent a crafty day building their very own Humphry Davy Lantern sculptures using withies and tissue paper. The lanterns will be paraded through Penzance this Friday for the town’s annual celebration marking the birthday of Sir Humphry Davy. Our students had so much fun creating their lanterns and are hoping for a dry evening so they can show them off on Friday!

Our Christmas tree is HUGE this year! When it arrived in reception last week, we couldn’t believe our eyes. Students and staff jumped straight in to decorate it (it definitely took a team!) and just like that, Christmas had officially arrived at HDS.
We love this time of year when the tree is up — it brings so much festive cheer and is impossible to walk past without commenting on its beauty and gorgeous smell. This year’s tree comes with a side of “WOW! Just look how big it is!”
Thank you to Mrs Berryman for the tree donation again this year, it is greatly appreciated by everyone here at HDS and all our visitors!
