Easter Activities

We are thrilled to once again be working with Plymouth Argyle this Easter for activity sessions across three days!

The sessions are open to children from age 7 to 16 and will take place on Tuesday 9^th, Wednesday 10^th and Thursday 11^th April.

During the sessions, children will be able to take part in a variety of activities such as:

- Football

- Cycling

- Basketball

- Tennis

- Dodgeball

- Tag Rugby

- Arts and Crafts

Humphry Davy School 25 Apr 2024 Yesterday HDS music scholars and singers walked down the road to perform for St Marys RC Primary School. The primary focus was singing, but there was also time for students to introduce themselves and their instruments to their younger peers. Trumpet, Tenor Sax, Flute, Double Bass and drums! It was great fun and the first step toward inspiring the next generation of HDS musicians!

Humphry Davy School 24 Apr 2024 This week students took part in the HDS Spring Recital at Zennor Theatre, Penwith College. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to perform in the college theatre space with a professional sound set up, meticulously organised by our Performance Co ordinator Mr Bosworth. HDS continued its strong jazz tradition with outstanding performances from New Notes jazz band, Scholar's jazz band and a 'jazzy' arrangement of the Sound Garden classic Black Hole Sun. The night also featured some outstanding vocal performances organised by Ms Turton and Ms Kleiman, once again with our music scholars taking key roles including some wonderful solo performances. Mr Martin provided a wonderful arrangement of the Radiohead classic 'No Surprises' as well as joining our Year 11 guitarist Jet for a beautiful classical guitar duet. Extra thanks also to Mr Martin for his sound engineering skills and Ms Meyritz for her brilliant accompanying. As well as providing trombone for jazz band, Mr Chinn played a key role in calming nerves, warming students up and providing performance advice to students waiting in the wings. The music department have a busy term ahead so watch out for more performances coming soon!

Humphry Davy School 22 Apr 2024 WOW! We had an amazing time skiing in France over the Easter break. The conditions were perfect, and it was great to see how well all the students progressed on the slopes over the 6 days we were there. Showing amazing resilience, our beginner group moved on quickly from the nursery slopes…skiing down some amazing blue runs by the end of the week. The intermediates made a great effort in combatting the reds, and the advanced group…well…we simply couldn’t keep up with them! Many thanks to the team at Elemental Ski, the staff at Hotel La Portette, and our amazing instructors for looking after us for the week! We can’t wait to come back next year! SIGN UP OPEN! Humphry Davy School 16 Apr 2024 NEW YEAR 11 REVISION TIMETABLE! There will now be weekly English, Maths and Science afterschool revision in the run up to the GCSE exams. Attendance at these after school sessions will boost your grade. If you are in Year 11, we expect to see you at these sessions. 3pm-4pm. Humphry Davy School 7 Apr 2024 What an amazingly fun week we have had on the 2024 Ski trip 🎿 The weather in Les Orres was perfect ❄️ ☀️ We saw snow at the beginning of the week and gorgeous blue skies at the end. 6 days of skiing with amazing instructors for all abilities, trips to the French shops, quiz and karaoke nights, it’s safe to say we had a great time! Humphry Davy School 22 Mar 2024 This month Year 10 Geography students visited Long Rock to investigate their physical fieldwork hypothesis: “Do the benefits of the Penzance coastal defences outweigh the costs?”. Students looked at the rock armour and the revetment along the coastal path and completed an environmental quality survey, considering the appearance, cost and effectiveness of the management strategy when evaluating its effectiveness at reducing coastal erosion and flooding. Students also completed numerous wave counts to determine whether the waves approaching the coastline were constructive or destructive; enabling them to decide whether the coastal defences were needed or not. Finally, students also mapped the surrounding land use to determine whether significant infrastructure in the local area would be at risk of flooding without the coastal defences. This data, supported with secondary data, will be presented and analysed by students back in school allowing them to evaluate the costs and benefits of the coastal management schemes in Penzance.

Humphry Davy School 13 Mar 2024 Are you a budding artist aged 15 -19 who lives, works, or studies in the Penzance Parish area? We are looking for a creative and imaginative young person to be the Mayor’s very first Young Artist! The Mayor's Young Artist will have the incredible opportunity to showcase their creativity and flair to the community of Penzance. We are looking for a talented individual, or small group, to create a piece of visual art inspired by the civic year and what Penzance means to you. Your final work will be exhibited at Penlee House Gallery & Museum in May 2025! During your year as the Mayor’s Young Artist, you will receive a £500 bursary which will include: • A one-to-one mentoring session with a professional artist • Art materials • Travel costs There are lots of events that make up the civic year, from Golowan to Remembrance Sunday, which the Mayor attends to represent Penzance Council and the local community. As the Mayor's Young Artist, you will have the chance to work directly with the Mayor and attend a variety of exciting local events to inspire your final piece! This could include fine art, photography, pottery, or film. Join us in celebrating the vibrant artistic spirit of Penzance and let your creativity shine as the Mayor's Young Artist! Humphry Davy School 13 Mar 2024 On Friday Science week started with a bang, or more accurately a WOOOF! Sergeant Little of Devon and Cornwall Police visited HDS with his victim recovery dogs to talk to students about his role in the police force and the capabilities of his amazing dogs. A selection of Year 7 and 10 students had the opportunity to see them in action as Skye the Sprocker found bandages hidden around the drama hall and Rex the 2 year old German Shepherd worked the room to the delight of everyone! Sargent Little captivated the audience with his in-depth accounts of how the dogs work and form an invaluable asset in keeping us all safe. We are massively grateful to Sargent Little, Skye and Rex for their valuable time. Science week runs for the rest of this week and has similar fascinating activities to open the mind to new possibilities.
