Humphry Davy School 11 Sep 2024 Today we were treated to an amazing Performance on the Plinth by our school music teachers. It's not often you get to hear professional musicians who are also your teachers perform as a band! So impressive. It was really inspiring and many children, particularly our new Year 7 flocked for the letters and sign up sheets. The benefits for children who learn to play an instrument are vast and well publicised. If you wish your child to start music/vocal lessons. September is the time to sign up! Humphry Davy School 11 Sep 2024 The Music Scholars Applications are now open! Any students with a musical background who wish to audition for the chance to be part of the amazing HDS Music Scholars should pick up an audition pack from reception. Written deadlines are Thursday 19th September. Full details can be found in the audition packs or speak with Mr Bosworth if you have any questions. Good luck in your auditions!

Humphry Davy School 10 Sep 2024 Welcome back everyone and a big welcome to our new Year 7 students! Our first full week is now underway and we cannot wait to see what the new school year has in store for you all. So many opportunities and memories await, with the first being Year 7 camp!

Humphry Davy School 22 Aug 2024 Congratulations to our amazing 2024 Year 11 students! We celebrated the magical moment of opening GCSE result envelopes and watching anxious expressions morph into smiles and joy and again this year! Over a third of all students achieved a top grade 7-9 (old grade A/A*) in at least one subject and over a quarter of all grades in Biology, Chemistry, Health and Social Care, Music, Physics, Spanish and Further Maths were at grade 7 or above (old grade A/A*)! There were some tremendous individual student achievements and special mention to Milly, Olive, Amelie, Martha, Tess and Helena who all achieved the equivalent of the old A*/A grades across the board in all their GCSEs! (That is 54 top grades between them!) Not wanting to be outdone by the girls, Jago, Jet, Cormack, Louis, Jack, Dylan and Frankie achieved the equivalent of 48 top grades. Just reward for hard work and positive attitudes! We are proud of these wonderful young adults and the superb role models they have become for our younger students and the wider Penzance community. Our sincere thanks to the dedicated and experienced team of staff here at HDS who make it all possible and to parents and carers who have every right to be proud of their children. Thank you for your support! We wish all our students ‘Good Luck!’ and continued success as they move on to the next stage of their education and careers. WELL DONE CLASS OF 2024!

Humphry Davy School 31 Jul 2024 Students, staff and friends of Humphry Davy School will be cheering on ex-Humphry Davy student Helen Glover as she competes in the Women's Fours Rowing at the Paris Olympics on Thursday morning. Aiming for her third Olympic Gold Medal, Helen is a wonderful inspiration to young people everywhere. A group of students took time out of their Activities Week to put together a good luck video. Humphry Davy School 26 Jul 2024 We are delighted to hear that HDS alumni, Helen Glover MBE, has been chosen as one of Team GB's Opening Ceremony flagbearers for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. We wish her lots of luck for this evening, and we are looking forward to watching her compete at her fourth Olympics in Paris as part of the women’s four rowing team. Good Luck Helen!

Humphry Davy School 19 Jul 2024 Recently, HDS obtained 10 new bikes through funding to teach and develop cycle confidence. Twelve students participated in a 12-week program to develop skills ensuring they can cycle confidently and safely on the roads. Six of these students recently completed the Level 1 & 2 Bikeability course, where they practiced various skills in the playground before applying them on local roads. They worked extremely hard to master these new skills, and all of them passed. Well done to everyone involved!

Humphry Davy School 18 Jul 2024 Monday 8th July was our annual Scholars Recital. This is an amazing evening of music performed by our most talented musicians in the school. The event marked an emotional farewell for some of our Year 11 music scholars, but also gave an opportunity for the younger upcoming musicians to shine. The night was curated expertly by our performance co-ordinator Mr Bosworth, with the rest of the faculty supporting and accompanying at various points during the evening. Any student wishing to become a music scholar must write a written application followed up by an audition in September. If successful they will then become committed to a year of fantastic opportunities and benefits working alongside our music department.

Humphry Davy School 17 Jul 2024 Year 11 celebrated in style at Tregenna Castle for their Leavers’ Ball this term. It was great seeing their wonderful outfits and fantastic vehicle choices as they arrived at the castle for a night of fun…the perfect way to celebrate the end of their exams! We look forward to seeing you all again for Results Day on 22nd August!

Humphry Davy School 17 Jul 2024 Congratulations to students Erin and Annie who have just represented England in the Dance World Cup in Prague! Their dance teams from Elite Acro Dance Associates, competed in the Junior Large Acro Team Section and placed 3rd! They also placed 4th in the Senior Large Acro Team Section with England placing 1st in the whole competition. What an incredible achievement for you both! We couldn’t be prouder of you! We look forward to closely watching your careers progress.

Humphry Davy School 16 Jul 2024 Twenty students from Year 9 and 10 were selected to take part in a Screen Acting Workshop this term with actor Nick Carpenter. Nick has worked in television and theatre, most recently on a new series for Channel 5! The students learnt about the journey from auditions through to production. They learnt about special effects and how these are created on stage as well as the difficulty of staying in character when filming 18-hour days. Nick then led them in an audition preparation workshop. The students gained a fantastic insight into a career in the film and television industry, and we are very grateful for this amazing opportunity.

There will be outstanding musical performances from our talented music students and staff, with festival refreshments in between! Please bring cash! Humphry Davy School 11 Jul 2024 We already know that learning a musical instrument will enrich your life in so many ways! The question is usually ‘how do I get started?’ HDS recently visited 9 primary schools to inspire the next generation of musicians and answer this exact question. 1. Speak to your parents and carers. Tell them what instrument excites you and that you want lessons. 2. Contact the Cornwall Music Service Trust and fill in a form expressing your interest. 3. Tell your primary school teacher/music lead teacher and they can also help. 4. Often the first thing people think about is buying an instrument. We advise against this initially. Arrange individual or group lessons first, then get specialist advice from your instrumental teacher. It might be best to hire. There may even be some instruments to loan for free! Just ask. If you'd like to hear more, why not come to our Summer Concert on our school field on the 16th July, 6pm. Enjoy the music then come and have a chat about starting lessons.
