NEW YEAR 11 REVISION TIMETABLE!
There will now be weekly English, Maths and Science afterschool revision in the run up to the GCSE exams. Attendance at these after school sessions will boost your grade. If you are in Year 11, we expect to see you at these sessions. 3pm-4pm.
If you need the school minibus to drop you home after the revision session, please register your interest at reception.

What an amazingly fun week we have had on the 2024 Ski trip 🎿 The weather in Les Orres was perfect ❄️ ☀️ We saw snow at the beginning of the week and gorgeous blue skies at the end. 6 days of skiing with amazing instructors for all abilities, trips to the French shops, quiz and karaoke nights, it’s safe to say we had a great time!

This month Year 10 Geography students visited Long Rock to investigate their physical fieldwork hypothesis: “Do the benefits of the Penzance coastal defences outweigh the costs?”.
Students looked at the rock armour and the revetment along the coastal path and completed an environmental quality survey, considering the appearance, cost and effectiveness of the management strategy when evaluating its effectiveness at reducing coastal erosion and flooding. Students also completed numerous wave counts to determine whether the waves approaching the coastline were constructive or destructive; enabling them to decide whether the coastal defences were needed or not. Finally, students also mapped the surrounding land use to determine whether significant infrastructure in the local area would be at risk of flooding without the coastal defences.
This data, supported with secondary data, will be presented and analysed by students back in school allowing them to evaluate the costs and benefits of the coastal management schemes in Penzance.

Are you a budding artist aged 15 -19 who lives, works, or studies in the Penzance Parish area? We are looking for a creative and imaginative young person to be the Mayor’s very first Young Artist!
The Mayor's Young Artist will have the incredible opportunity to showcase their creativity and flair to the community of Penzance. We are looking for a talented individual, or small group, to create a piece of visual art inspired by the civic year and what Penzance means to you. Your final work will be exhibited at Penlee House Gallery & Museum in May 2025!
During your year as the Mayor’s Young Artist, you will receive a £500 bursary which will include:
• A one-to-one mentoring session with a professional artist
• Art materials
• Travel costs
There are lots of events that make up the civic year, from Golowan to Remembrance Sunday, which the Mayor attends to represent Penzance Council and the local community. As the Mayor's Young Artist, you will have the chance to work directly with the Mayor and attend a variety of exciting local events to inspire your final piece! This could include fine art, photography, pottery, or film.

On Friday Science week started with a bang, or more accurately a WOOOF!
Sergeant Little of Devon and Cornwall Police visited HDS with his victim recovery dogs to talk to students about his role in the police force and the capabilities of his amazing dogs.
A selection of Year 7 and 10 students had the opportunity to see them in action as Skye the Sprocker found bandages hidden around the drama hall and Rex the 2 year old German Shepherd worked the room to the delight of everyone! Sargent Little captivated the audience with his in-depth accounts of how the dogs work and form an invaluable asset in keeping us all safe.
We are massively grateful to Sargent Little, Skye and Rex for their valuable time. Science week runs for the rest of this week and has similar fascinating activities to open the mind to new possibilities.

We welcoming pupils from St Mary’s RC Primary School to HDS. They enjoyed a session in our Applied Learning department where they learnt about technology in textiles. The pupils got the chance to experiment with sublimation paint and our heat press to print their own bags and T-shirts. A fun lesson was had by all with some great outcomes!

Year 9 Textiles work has been proudly on display at the Penlee House Gallery & Museum following their lino printing workshop based on famous local company Crysede.
Thank you to Penlee Gallery for the fantastic session. Our students thoroughly enjoyed learning all about the patterns, fabrics and garments that the Crysede company created and loved experimenting with lino printing inspired by their designs.
Our students work will be on display until 11th March. Be sure to visit for yourself and enjoy the brilliant displays Penlee have on show! (Under 18s and Penzance locals get in free!)

Yesterday we celebrated St Piran’s Day by taking part in the annual parade in Penzance. Our students paraded through the streets, alongside local primary school pupils, with black and white rosettes proudly pinned onto their school uniform.
We had a great day celebrating this Cornish tradition with our local community. We hope you all had a fantastic St Piran’s Day! Gool Peran Lowen.

The sessions are open to children from age 7 to 16 and will take place on Tuesday 9th, Wednesday 10th and Thursday 11th April.

Year 7 - 9 girls enjoyed a day of rugby last week. The day consisted of skills and drills led by number of coaches and teachers, followed by competitive games in the afternoon. A great day had by all despite the rain and mud! Well done girls!
