Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's Award

Posted on: 21/05/2021
This term HDS students have been adventuring in our stunning Cornish landscape as part of their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.  Although the expeditions could not take place in their usual way due to national restrictions, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a valuable (and life- changing) experience for many of our students, and we did not want them to miss out!

Unable to camp out overnight, the expeditions took part over two consecutive days.  Our students tackled a range of different weathers during their hikes and, it is safe to say, a warm bed (rather than a tent for the night) was a welcomed promise!

Friday morning arrived and the groups of intrepid explorers descended on St Just.  After a final briefing the students dispersed to the four corners of the village to start on their long journey towards St Buryan.  West Penwith was transformed; the quiet country paths echoing with the sounds of marching feet and laughter.  Camping stoves were used during their lunch stops where a range of culinary feasts were prepared!

With a huge sense of achievement, they made their way to the finish line at Land’s End.  Students were greeted with the reward of hugs from family and a promise of a relaxing Sunday to recharge before school on Monday morning.

What an incredible achievement!  The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is such a fantastic experience and opportunity for all HDS students and everyone is encouraged to take part.  Well done to everyone who completed this year’s bronze expeditions!
