Bill Marshall, Headteacher at Humphry Davy School; " Following Helen’s fantastic achievement in 2012, students from Humphry Davy and surrounding schools have been so fortunate to have her visit and inspire them with an ever increasing number of students going on to perform at the highest levels in a wide range of sports. Hard work, dedication, and commitment clearly pay off and Helen is a fantastic role model to all young people everywhere.

An integral part of our Humphry Davy School vision is, ‘to unlock the talent and enterprise of all our young people’ and ‘to develop their full academic, creative, physical and personal potential’. A ‘Double Olympic Gold Medallist’ coming from Humphry Davy School can only reinforce our ‘can do’ philosophy and build confidence.

We are incredibly proud of Helen! Even changing rowing partners to pair with Polly Swann in 2013 did not impede her success; pairs rowing is a team effort but Helen is clearly an amazing athlete.

Well done to both Helen and Heather and we look forward to welcoming you back to Penzance and celebrating with the local community.”

The Town Mayor added:

“Penzance is very proud of Helen and her amazing achievement in gaining another gold medal in the 2016 Olympics to sit alongside her medal from  the 2012 Olympics.  On behalf of the Town Council and all the people of Penzance - congratulations Helen and we are looking forward to welcoming you back to your hometown in true Cornish style!”

There are lots of opportunities to get involved in rowing in Cornwall, including sliding seat, gig, flashboat and surf boat rowing. If you would like to find out where your local club is,  British Rowing have a club finder on their website:

Your local contact for British Rowing is Rhiannon Bailey who can be contacted on rhiannon.bailey@britishrowing.org 07818576145. Rhiannon will be at the victory parade near the stop in the harbour car park in Penzance and would love to talk to anyone interested in trying rowing. @RowWestRegion

During our incredible Sports Day on Tuesday 19th July students took time out to offer HDS alumna Helen Glover some words of encouragement and support:

Helen attended Humphry Davy School between 1997 and 2002 where she took part in a wide variety of sports.  As well as running international junior cross-country, she was a member of the England hockey Satellite Squad and represented Cornwall in both tennis and swimming.

In 2012, Helen won a historic gold medal at the Olympic Games in London in 2012 and, when she returned to Penzance, her success was celebrated by a fantastic Victory Parade though Newlyn and Penzance, and a Civic Reception held at Humphry Davy School.

Helen is also three-times World Champion, twice European Champion and a multiple world cup gold medal winner.

In addition to sending numerous messages of encouragement to our students, she has visited the school in person to talk about her experiences, her drive and her passion for rowing.
