"I have been a governor at Humphry Davy School since 1999, and Chair since 2006. I am also a Trustee (on behalf of Humphry Davy School) of the Penwith Education Trust (PET).

I have spent most of my working life in local government and that experience, in policy development and evaluation, and understanding government and local authority finance, has been a great help in carrying out my role as a governor.

My daughter attended the school before continuing her education at Penwith College and University.

As a family, we were very happy with the caring and holistic ethos of the school and it is important to me, as a governor, to sustain that ethos while at the same time responding positively and effectively to government and other challenges, and ensuring that every student has the opportunity and support to achieve their very best.

I have a keen interest in the future development of Cornwall, in terms of education, employment opportunities, affordable housing and its special culture and environment. I am a Board member, and Chair, of Cornwall Rural Housing Association and a member of the Gulval Village Community Association I am also a ‘fair trader’ for Traidcraft , an organisation fighting poverty across the world through fair trade and development. I enjoy walking, and listening to most kinds of music."

"I became a co-opted governor at Humphry Davy School in 2013 after retiring from teaching in a primary school. I was a head teacher of a small village school for 16 years and also an executive headteacher of two such schools for 4 years.

Working as a governor at Humphry Davy has been both challenging and exhilarating. I am the link governor for English and modern foreign languages and have been fortunate to have visited our link schools at Le Nivot in Brittany twice and our partner school in Spain once. I believe passionately in international education and encouraging our children to learn about different countries and cultures, as well as helping them make friends with students from all over the world. I drive one of the school minibuses when required, so that students have the opportunity to visit the theatre and other places of interest outside of the classroom.

Alongside a colleague I support the science department's Cafe Scientifique where an invited guest speaks to the students about science and technology. This is then followed by a Q&A session with students in an informal cafe atmosphere.

Last year I played in Humphry Davy School's band at the Festival for Youth in Birmingham when the school made it through to the finals. It was an amazing occasion and one I will always remember because of the enthusiasm and good behaviour of our students. I am proud to be associated with such a good school as Humphry Davy. The staff work tirelessly for the good of all the school community and I am happy to help contribute in any way I can.

I am married with two grown-up daughters."

"I have lived and worked in Penzance for 40 years and am now retired. My granddaughter has just started in Year 7 at Humphry Davy School.

My working life was spent working in the local authority, initially as a Social Worker, and, in the latter years, managing a children's charity and then developing and managing the Sure Start programmes across Cornwall.

Since my retirement I have been a governor at a local primary school, and I have developed a passion for education and supporting its delivery locally. My special interest is in those children who have particular needs, or who have difficulty at school for any reason. I am a passionate believer in equal opportunities for every child.

I am a Trustee of several local charities, all of which operate to benefit the lives of local children in some way.

My spare time is spent gardening, walking, reading and travelling with my husband.

I hope and believe I bring experiences and attitudes that can be of benefit to Humphry Davy School, and I am really looking forward to making a positive contribution over the years ahead."

"Appointed a Community Governor in September 2009, I was appointed a Foundation Governor when the Penwith Education (Co-operative) Trust was established.

I have a background in education, having taught at University and primary level, but I have more recently worked in Early Years, latterly managing Children’s Centres in the West of the County.

I am married with two sons, both of whom attended the school, and a daughter who attends Pencalenick Special School in Truro.  My interest in the school goes back a long way as members of my family have attended since its inception as the Penzance County School, but it is the caring and inclusive ethos of today’s community school, coupled with the determination to provide students with the best educational opportunities possible and the support they require to access them, which command my loyalty.  I am presently Vice Chair of the Governing Body, I chair the Safeguarding Committee and am link for Safeguarding, Children in Care, Maths (with Andy Fox) and Pupil Premium."

"I have been a governor since 2005, initially as a parent and subsequently as a Local Authority governor. After 36 years of teaching PE, 28 of those at Penzance Girls' Grammar School and HDS, I retired but still wanted to be involved with the school in which I spent many happy years. My own two children grew and achieved at HDS, both choosing to study for B.Mus.degrees in higher education. Their decisions were encouraged in no small part by the musical experiences and opportunities available at HDS alongside its musical links with the community.

I read, paint, walk my dogs, play badminton (when I am not at governor's meetings on Tuesday evenings!) and try to manage a large garden.

I am very proud to continue my links with HDS, a caring and truly inclusive school, which values individuals at the same time as giving the best educational opportunities possible. I look forward to supporting the Headteacher, staff and pupils in the future."

"As a former pupil of Humphry Davy School (in the dim distant past) I am proud to be able to support the school as a parent governor.

A potted history! I graduated from University of Cardiff as a primary school teacher in 1991. I have taught in primary schools in Berkshire, Cardiff and Cornwall. I was also a Specialist Teacher for the Behaviour Advisory team in Cardiff.

In 2006 I returned home to Cornwall to take up position of Deputy Headteacher. I studied for my National Professional Qualification for Headteachers in 2008 and took up my first Headship at St Erth CP School in January 2010 where I continue to enjoy working with a great team of staff, parents and children.

I am married and have two children, Jack and Josh, with whom I love to spend lots of time on either cricket or rugby fields throughout the year!!!"

"I have just been re-appointed (July 2015) as a Foundation Governor, after my term as a Parent Governor was completed. I am also a local authority governor at Alverton Primary School in Penzance.

My work has been predominantly within the Creative Arts sector, particularly photography, film and music. I enjoy learning about different cultures and languages and have worked abroad in various countries. I also have a strong belief in the power and value of the local community and feel our schools are a fundamental part of that.

I have been actively involved with HDS since 2005 as both my son and daughter were students here.  My daughter just left this summer. I have always felt very supportive of the school and its caring ethos combined with the encouragement it gives to young people to do the best they can.  I am keen to see the school continue to build and flourish on this well-deserved reputation."

"I live in Ludgvan and I am also a governor at Ludgvan School (for six years so far!). I completed an OU degree in psychology in 2010 and have a particular interest in child development. I love being a governor – it seems the perfect way for me to support the schools that I feel are supporting my children so well. And I'm fortunate to have the time to take on the role. I love maths, science, art and design. I do a lot of photography and love being outside. I think I'm good at listening and seeing both sides of a debate and I think that's a useful skill in any governing body. As a parent, I've only been involved with Humphry Davy School for a couple of years but I love the ethos of the school and the individuality of the students combined with the sense of community. I am very pleased to be able to support the school to maintain its distinctive culture."
