Humphry Davy School. A Specialist Music and Maths College
In September 2005, Humphry Davy School was designated a Specialist Music and Maths College and our work in this area has been celebrated both nationally and internationally. We believe that Music is a major tool for learning and driving up standards. Music engages everyone, as it is something about which we all have an opinion, and the majority of lessons at the school, irrespective of curriculum area will have a musical element. At Humphry Davy School, learning is something that is done by young people, and not something that is done to them.
We are proud of our pioneering work in terms of offering a challenging and innovative musical curriculum. National institutions such as the Specialist Schools and Academies trust have showcased Humphry Davy School as an example of good practice.
The school has partnerships at all levels, and is proud to work with our local primary schools as well as schools throughout the country as well as around the world. The school has recently filmed an opera which was composed by our learners as part of a collaborative project with another Speciliast Music College and we are working with the British Council and the Youth Sport Trust at an International level. Humphry Davy School is one of the leaders in the Hamlyn foundations’ Musical Bridges project looking at ways in which music can ease the transition between Key Stages two and three.
Learners throughout the school can take further lessons on a range of instruments or voice. Working in partnership with a local provider, the school offers individual or group lessons with a full quality assurance programme to ensure that progress is maximized.
The school offers a full programme of extra curricular opportunities including a male voice choir, a jazz band, chamber music groups for string and wind players as well as a plethora of rock bands for musicians of all abilities, tastes and experience,. There is also a specialist dance music zone for composers wishing to get us moving to the latest beats. All of this is supported through an extensive range of performance opportunities both in and outside school.
The Maths faculty offers an ICT rich curriculum which is supported by strong links with our local primary schools. The school also runs a family learning project where students and parents come to develop their numeracy skills side by side.
"The school is recognised as a centre of regional excellence for music . . ."
“The specialism in music is a particular strength that pervades many areas of students’ achievement and personal development”
